Day 20 (YESSSS...you’ve made it a whole 20 days!!!) of #SPLITtember and we have #CompassPose | #ParivrttaSuryaYantrasana also known as #SunDialPose My video includes several options as well as the use of my @infinitystrap but be sure to check out my co-hosts tomorrow for their options👍🏻 Now most think this pose is all about hamstrings...WRONG! Rotation in your hip is needed first. I find it helpful to bring my thigh as high as I can on my shoulder prior to making the bind and extending my leg. I also keep both sits bones grounded, but your welcome to lift the hip of your extended leg if needed. There is also a bit of a twist and bend happening as you fully extend and work to close the gap between thigh and side body. You may not be here quite yet, but that’s okay. Instead of contorting your body to make it happen, use a strap to allow the space to maintain form👌🏻 and if you have any questions please feel free to ask😄 . 🎶 by Live Better Media . Either way, I find it super helpful personally if I add the fold forward. It helps my top knee lower and both hips really settle in. But there are also a good many people who feel they can’t do, don’t understand, experience pain, and blame quitting their ashtanga practice on performing this posture in its variety of ways throughout the primary series. So just for a moment let’s look at the basics of this pose. First being able to achieve a seated single leg bound version (Ardha Baddha Padma Pachimattanasana) will lead to a full seated lotus (padmasana). The main thing here, which I feel overlooked is being able to put your knee into full flexibility so that when manually putting your hip/ leg into external rotation it doesn’t twist your knee. Another consideration is the alignment of the heel of your foot in line with the center rather than off to the side of your body, so that your foot rests more comfortably in the soft middle of your belly rather than the hard femur bone in your thigh. Placing your foot off to the side also increases the likelyhood that you will. lose some flexion. My advice is to keep your hip doing what it’s supposed to do in padmasana: which is abduction and external rotation. #igyogalove and follow us to see more post💮 --- 🌷🎯📝 Day 1️⃣9️⃣ of with ➡️ 📝🎯🌷 The idea behind this today is to practice that family of poses applying the ‘surrendering’ concept we’ve been talking about. Besides devotion, intention, enthusiasm,... another important element to include is a sense of letting go, accept we can’t control everything and be content with that. I tend to attract ‘intense’ people to my classes (same vibes???) and, quite often, I have to tell them to ‘chill’ and do ‘less’. Having a fiery personality reflects also in our practice and, quite often, too much fire brings injuries and other problems. In order to have balance, there has to be a cooling/soothing component, like the yielding I’m proposing. If you wonder how to practically apply it: warm up for backbends and, when you arrive to ​tougher​ ones (like the one in the pic), give yourself 2-3 extra breaths to lengthen the spine and push the arch higher as the chest goes out more. Keep opening the heart area, imagine there’s a hand behind you, between the blades, pushing slightly, and keep that sensation the whole time you’re in the pose. Relax the head, let gravity stretch the throat. Drop shoulders, push pubic bone into the mat and bend the legs, sending toes towards crown. Instead of forcing yourself to close the gap by doing unnatural moves (like contracting the hamstrings to the point where they cramp), forget how far you are and concentrate on making the backbend feel GREAT. When you practice to feel fantastic/rejuvenated/at peace, instead of having an agenda to be done by a certain date, all weight lifts up and you’ll enjoy your time on the mat way more (and improve faster too, though that’s secondary).
