That was 9 years ago. 😱 I was completely blown away as to how can people go upside down and hold it for so many breaths. It made me breathless just thinking about it 🥵 I was determined to getting upside down 🤸🏼‍♀️. It was not as easy as it looked. I even went to India and still didn’t get it. I fell many times. I spent many years at the wall. Slowly moving away from the wall. Realizing now that the only wall that ever existed was the wall I created in my mind all those years. Our own limitations, thoughts, fears, and doubts, build walls around us to try to stop us from becoming who and what we want to be. Just like we are the creator who build the wall we can also tear it down. #wisdomwednesday #trust #surrender

Today! We will be at Project Homeless Connect teaching yoga to some our most vulnerable warriors out there: individuals experiencing homelessness in Santa Cruz County. Homelessness is oh so real. The need for more affordable housing and an increased demand in affordable mental health services has been on the rise exponentially in our beloved community. Thankfully, there are events like @phcsantacruz that bring resource providers together to offer a free haircut, fresh pair of clothes, food, blankets and a variety of other support. No questions asked. Just universal compassion. And yoga! We’ll be there! From 9:30-12:30 we’ll be teaching restorative yoga to minds and hearts into balance for overall health. This is the medicine. Where to start? When I was struggling with depression, anxiety, and crazy amounts of pain (more on all that later), I was introduced to yoga. And, wow, what a practice. I can honestly say for me it has become a part of me and has helped me soooooo much along my healing journey. And, I was the person calling yogi’s tree huggers and just didn’t get it. 😔 . Now, I can’t imagine my life without it. After i took my first few classes, I wanted to know more. And, boy - did I learn more. . I have to give so much love, gratitude and thanks to my yoga teacher trainer @stephanie_healthboss . With her I took my first 200 hours vinyasa yoga flow (kripalu lineage), 100 hour yin yoga, and 50 hour restorative therapeutic yoga. This woman knows her stuff and I can’t imagine having learned from anyone else. This was such a transformative part of my journey - words can not describe. It’s a feeling. 💕 . The definition of yoga as I learned it is “ceasing the fluctuations of the mind” if you have racing thoughts - yoga is for you. . So much of who I have become and my mission in the world has come from the foundations I learned in these yoga classes. From chanting, to chakras, to the human body, and meditation. . If you have never tried yoga, start today. Find a studio, a teacher, or an online forum that connects with you. Flexibility requires a lot of strength 💪🏼 I learned this realization the hard way after I overstretched one of my hamstrings, and I couldn’t practice splits or straddles for three months 🤦🏼‍♀️ ✧ For many years, I believed that the only way to achieve flexibility was to hold “flexibility poses” with little to no muscular engagement. Although passive stretching helps lengthen muscles and open connective tissues (hello yin yoga!), like anything in life, too much of anything creates imbalance in the body. Eventually, too much passive stretching created little rips that frayed the attachment of my hamstring to its respective sitting bone. ✧ Although injuries aren’t fun, I am grateful that it happened because it completely changed my philosophy on flexibility, and most importantly, it has made me a better teacher ✨ Before I would force my body passively, but now, I surrender two-thirds of my practice to strength building to warm up targeted muscle groups prior to any “flexibility” work. And when I do practice “flexibility”, I make sure to activate like crazy in order to bring homeostasis back to the muscles and connective tissues, simultaneously strengthening and lengthening. They motivate me to practice more, to be a better person, to be a little calmer, to go back to my teachings, my values and my beliefs. How do you show up? ▪️ Every single day we are gifted with a choice ... how will we show up in the world today? How will we show up for others? How will we show up for ourselves? ▪️ A practice I began quite some time ago was to simply stop, place my hand upon my heart and call in kindness and compassion for those times I may not be “showing up” in the kindest of ways ... where anger, frustration, etc... may be in the forefront. This has helped me to not be so reactive, impatient ... and has prevented me from saying something I may regret. ▪️ So next time you may feel yourself “showing up” in a way that may not serve you best, that may cause regret — stop, place your hand upon your heart and remember to let kindness lead the way. ❤️❤️❤️ #practiceahimsadaily

I love evening meditation, and I go through periods where I will turn to it often. There is such a different energy to explore, a tantric vibe to tune into, and I tend to have more seeing, journeying, vision experiences in evening meditations as well. Last night I decided that my full moon, letting go ceremony would be solo. I just need that space sometimes. I did a personal cacao ceremony followed by fire release....I allow myself to go where spirit calls me in these inner moments and last night I ended in Garuda mudra (maybe fresh in my awareness as I offered it in one of last weeks yoga classes). So, I thought I would share. Each mudra has such different energy and we will each feel them differently depending on if it is “needed” at the time. Almost always this has such a sweet and open feeling for me. In meditation, Clasp thumbs, so left hand is on bottom and place on lowest abdomen, hold for 10 deep breaths. Slide up to navel for 10 breaths, move to highest stomach for 10 breaths, finally, up to your chest, fingers will turn towards shoulders and spread wide for 10 breaths. This mudra activates blood flow, circulation, invigorates organs, balances energy on both sides of body. Stimulates energy in pelvis, belly & chest area. Relaxes & relieves pain related to menstrual cramps, stomach upsets & respiratory difficulties. Helps with exhaustion & mood fluctuations. So, Wow! This is a powerful mudra and packs a punch! Monday tips 😉 Shitali Pranayama, the refreshing breath. 😥 During days likes today, when it's really hot outside, you can use this pranayama to cool down the body and mind. 😥 Roll up your tongue or form a small circle with your mouth. Breathe in through your mouth so that the air passes over your tongue. Close your mouth and exhale through your nose. Repeat as long as you feel the need. . . It’s great to see that so many companies are starting to promote wellness and giving employees a day to explore ways of maintaining their mental and physical health. This is the second one I’ve been a part of and they are so much fun! Since many of the people have never tried yoga before, you really have to go back to basics and it’s a reminder of how challenging asana was in the beginning - when that temporary but complete disorientation sets in and you can’t tell right from left or up from down and you’ve forgotten which way forward is. Anahatasana. Melting heart. Puppy Pose. Visiting @greenoffice_sa last week got me thinking about how we can modify yoga poses for instant relief throughout the day. Anahatasana is a treat if you hunch over a desk all day or do a lot of driving, but you don’t have to wait until the end of the day to soothe your aching back - you can also do a seated or standing version. Just rest your arms or elbows on the desk and hang down into the stretch, feeling your spine lengthen.. #POSEOFTHEWEEK One legged Pigeon Pose / Eka Pada Rajakapotasana . . . This week’s #poseoftheweek is brought to you courtesy our dedicated #gyyogi Vidjaya! Here she is holding pigeon also referred to as the “King of Hip Openers”. This pose acts as an effective hip opener that relieves chronic lower back pain and sciatic nerve tension while increasing circulation to the urinary, digestive and reproductive systems. . . . if you’ve taken a class with us you would have heard our teachers say time and again that we (especially women) carry our stress in our hips and that it is important that we use postures such as this one to relieve that stress on a daily basis. . . . HOW TO:- 1. Start on hands and knees. 2. Move right knee directly behind right wrist. 3. Slide left knee back in line with rest of the body until you feel that stretch along left hip and thigh muscle. 4. Gentle start turning right foot so that right calf and shin are parallel to short end at top of your mat. 5. Make sure weight is evenly displaced between both hips. 6. Look back at left leg and adjust if you need to. 7. Energetically pull right hip back and press left hip forward. This is a subtle movement. 8. If it is in your practice, gently lower down into forearms or go even further and extend arms forward with forehead on the mat or mounted on both fists. 9. Hold for 4-6 breaths. Find stillness and steadiness. Focus your attention inward. 10. To get out of the pose bring palms on the floor again and slowly lift left knee and step back into downward facing dog. Peddle the feet out. 11. Return to starting position. Hands and knees on the mat and prepare to do the left hip. Be careful: if you have sensitive knees. Use padding, blocks or blankets to support suspended knees and hips. . . . We trust and feel at home in our bodies, we trust that all will be abundantly provided and that we have everything we need right here and now. There is a deep inner knowing that we are deeply connected to all things, all beings, all of nature 🌱 If, on the other hand, there are external forces that are outside of our control, which threaten our survival - issues with work or home life, our finances, our health - we may struggle with relaxing or sitting still, have difficulty getting out of our heads, and may be dealing with an underlying sense of fear and anxiety on a daily basis. In our modern world this really isn’t uncommon at all 🌱 · Therefore, practices that help us to ground and balance the root chakra are vital. Every time I step on my mat, I am reminded to reconnect to something I’ve lost in the chaos of day to day life. Today, Louise invited me to “try easy”. I love this concept because as someone who goes hard with everything I do, I often forget to enjoy each moment. Isn’t it funny how sometimes we try so hard that we create our own resistance? The harder we try, the more stressed we feel. And then the more resistance we face. This can result in frustration, stagnation and loss of momentum. This transition to headstand will not work if you fight it. It’s in finding the ease that allows the flow in getting into this pose. Ease in mind opens the possibility for ease in action.
