WEDNESDAYS: WHY I YOGA.
On a Thursday;) Featuring: Daniela F. "Almost 6 years ago, multiple hamstring injuries from running led me to my first yoga class. I definitely didn't enjoy it that first time. I had considered myself to be fit, yet I now found myself in a class where I felt defeated by the stronger practises of everyone else in the room. I could barely fold to touch my calves, while others folded like pretzels. I am very competitive by nature, so it was hard not to look in the mirror and compare myself to others. Nevertheless, I purchased a 6-month membership as a way of ensuring I would attend classes and progress. In the beginning, it was purely a physical challenge for me. Shortly after this, I faced some very challenging times in my personal life, and with my career. My doctor ordered time off work and prescribed medication for depression. I agreed to the leave from work, but refused to take the medication. Instead, I turned to my yoga practice. I begin to practice every day, along with spending time outdoors. I learned how to connect to my breath to help me fall asleep, and to bring calm and patience to my everyday life. I learned to live in the present, rather than replaying the past or worrying about what lay ahead.
Yoga practice taught me that nothing is permanent. Discomfort in a pose on your mat eventually passes, as does disruption & sadness in our lives. How I deal with stress in my life has changed dramatically, and I have my yoga practice and all of my amazing yoga instructors to thank for that. I make yoga my priority; every Sunday evening as I look at the week ahead, I add a yoga class into my schedule for each day. In order to be productive, we need to look after ourselves first. This lesson has changed the course of my life.
Yoga Light is full of experienced instructors and wonderful yogis; it is truly my home away from home, and I am grateful to have this studio and these people in my life..."
