The first record I ever bought with my own money was Lionel Richie’s ‘Can’t Slow Down.’ Every kid I knew had @michaeljackson
’Thriller’ and I heard it constantly. I wanted to buy something different, and Lionel was an easier sell to my mother than the cigarette-smoking cherub on the cover of @vanhalen
‘1984.’ Plus, I honestly dug Lionel Richie. He seemed cool and fun, kind and romantic (I still think he sings some of the best love songs in pop music. The lyrics are simple, sincere, unironic, and speak to the heart of the matter when it comes to matters of the heart), he didn’t offend my parents (which was important as a second-grader attending a private parochial school who lived in constant fear of disappointing everyone), and, I mean, let’s talk about the fashion choices on that album art: the blue button-down with white pants and shoes on the cover, sitting backwards in that chair so “Devil-may-care.” That pink blazer over grey T-shirt, jeans, and no socks on the back. Sonny Crockett, eat your heart out.•
While my musical taste has broadened and, hopefully, evolved over the years, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Lionel.
On the morning of our 5th wedding anniversary, @ana_belle_may
and I still didn’t know how we were going to celebrate the day. I had been halfway joking about going to see Lionel at his Vegas residency for a couple of months, and she had seriously considered surprising me with tickets, but wasn’t sure how sincere I was about it. (Admittedly, my snarkiness and utter insincerity has burned many gift-givers in the past, who don’t know when I’m kidding, so...).•
While flipping through the latest issue of @lasvegasweekly
I spotted an ad for Lionel’s show at The Zappos Theater @phvegas.
💡🤔💕 What better way to celebrate your love than an evening with a former @motownrecords
legend who scored 13 consecutive Top Ten hits (5 of them #1s
) from 1981-1987 (the year my wife was born)?•
True to the name of the show, Lionel DID, indeed, perform “All the Hits.” This was my favorite moment of the night, though, a medley of @thecommodores
“Brick House” & @ohioplayers
