To commemorate the centennial of President John F. Kennedy’s birth the @USPostalService has dedicated a #Forever stamp in his honor. The stamp features a 1960 photograph by @thephotosociety member Ted Spiegel. The photograph on the stamp was taken on September 6, 1960 in Victory Square, Seattle, adjacent to downtown’s Olympic Hotel. Senator John Kennedy was in the first week of his campaign for the presidency: his itinerary was nation spanning – Maine to Alaska. Seated by the podium from which he would deliver his first speech in Seattle, he was looking up at office building windows crammed with cheering supporters. It was a highly energetic moment and one could sense #Kennedy subsuming the place and people surrounding him. Soon he would address thousands at Seattle’s Civic Auditorium. His remarks closed with these words: “I have called the challenge of the future the new frontier….my call is to those who believe in the future….I want you to join me….give me your help, your heart, your voice….and this country will move again.” For me this photograph captures Kennedy sensing his responsibility to the public’s response. #jfkstamp #jfk100 #jfk #kennedy #history #Seattle #MemorialDay
Photo by @FransLanting Two orphaned orangutans play together at a rehabilitation center in northern Borneo. Like human babies, they need affection and constant care from their mothers in order to become healthy adults. In Borneo and Sumatra, where they live in the wild, many orangutans are displaced during logging operations, and baby orangs are also victims of the illegal pet trade—captured by poachers who kill their mothers to reach them. These young ones will be cared for until they can be released into an adjacent forest reserve. Photo by @gerdludwig // After a spectacular wildflower season, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve Center in the Mojave Desert closed its doors, scheduled to reopen in February 2018. Here is a selection of 3 images I took during short trips to Antelope Valley last month. Due to the heavy precipitation during the rainy season, the poppy bloom blanketed the rolling desert hills of the valley but often closed early as a result of cold winds. You can see additional photographs from my visits to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve at @gerdludwig @natgeo @natgeocreative #wildflowers #AntelopeValley #California #bloom #poppies #Mojave
Photo by @jeff_gusky // It’s a bit surreal to find messages written by people who lived a century ago in places that are virtually unknown. This inscription, made by a German WWI tunneler, says “God strike England”. He also wishes German soldiers “Good Luck!” as they passed by on the way to fight in the trenches. This photograph is part of an 18 month exhibition of my work on The Hidden World of World War I at The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC http://tiny.cc/2vw6jy. #history #hiddenwwi #wwi #hidden #smithsonian #Europe #France
Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto /@thephotosociety Red fox cub – (Graphic descriptions included!) As an election nears in the UK we are faced with a similarly stark choice that the US faced in the final months of their election cycle. On one side we have the UK’s version of Bernie Sanders, Labour leader @jeremy_corbynmp. Compassionate, informed, progressive and with a goal of creating a fairer society, a society where decisions are made to benefit the many, not the few. On the other we have the UK’s very own Donald Trump, Conservative leader @theresamay. Tax cuts for the rich, continued decimation of our National Health Service, out of control spending on Defence and the return of the barbaric sickness of fox hunting all await the possible election of a party that serves only the privileged yet prejudiced elite. No concern is given in our parliamentary democracy that 84% of the UK population oppose this despicable cruelty just like no regard is given to the environmental value of these apex predators. Beautiful young cubs, just like this one, urinating and defecating in unbridled terror, will be routinely thrown alive to packs of slavering hounds, their tiny bodies torn limb from limb. The blood from their corpses is then smeared on the faces on young children, a most perverted initiation to this Victorian obscenity. This is the sort of despicable cruelty that only a psychopath could inflict, yet is supported by @theresamay. This is the blood stained face of our current Prime Minister, representing a government that seeks to inflict immeasurable suffering on innocents and I will fight with every breath to ensure that this cancer, this perversion is left where it belongs, as part of our rich and often shameful history. Our world is faced with some stark choices at the moment but I will always choose compassion over abuse, honour and decency over privilege and entitlement, reason and logic over Victorian ignorance and prejudice. I will vote that this disgusting sickness is left where it rightly belongs and that’s why I will vote for @jeremy_corbynmp @andyparkinsonphoto @thephotosociety @uklabour @jeremy_corbynmp #foxcub #uklabour #fightforwhatisright #honour

Photo by @joepetersburger // FROM THE FLOWERBED // I was invited to La Palma Island, Canary Islands to hold a #presentation about my main message: „travel less, discover your backyard”. Beside showing award-winning photos from my neighborhood, I took pictures on site. Without any preparation and local knowledge, I had some really exciting shots. Like this one about a red-veined #darter #female #dragonfly (Sympetrum fonscolombii) perching on a twig. This twig was just couple steps away from the museum I presented! No need to travel far away for fantastic experience. Travel less, discover your backyard, reduce your ecological footprint! "Spring in Weinheim, Germany often passes in the blink of an eye; you fall asleep in winter, and when you wake up the next day summer has already swooped in the door. When I took this photo, I stood under the tree and thought of how grateful I am to live near a place like this. For me, photography isn’t about seeking beauty elsewhere; it’s about discovering the beauty that already exists beneath your own two feet, and distilling that beauty into an image. . As I write this, spring has arrived in Weinheim — for now at least — and it has brought with it the anticipation of new life. A fleeting and fragile green bud and stem that can’t be rushed — only appreciated. I have a small son, and as he grows older, I plan to take him to this tree each spring and teach him to see the beauty in front of him. If I can do that, I can only imagine how the world beyond Weinheim will appear to him when he’s ready to explore it." . Photo credit goes to @hatcat_photography for this amazing image and story, and a big thanks to @alamorentacar for joining us for #TPSMySpring . Lastly, thanks to everyone who shared their springtime stories and images with us!
Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto /@thephotosociety Arctic tern in aggressive posture – This image was taken as part of a commission that I worked on many years ago for the National Trust. I had special permission to land early on the larger of the Farne Islands, Inner Farne before the packed tourist boats began to arrive. Part of the unique experience of these islands is that upon landing you then have to make your way up the boardwalk which takes you through the arctic tern colony. These birds are notoriously protective of their territories and in a scene almost reminiscent of the birds all of the tourists are flown at and pecked as they wander through the colony. On many occasions I have seen terrified young children arrive on the island in floods of tears, doubtless left with a lifelong fear of birds, such is the aggressive nature of these beautiful birds. Under the watchful eye of the warden David Steel I was able to spend some time alone working with these birds and so all of their ire was directed solely at me. The time that I with them spent was extremely brief but part of their defensive strategy, as well as pecking at ones head with their needle sharp beaks is to defecate on any interloper as well. In no time at all I was covered in faeces with one particularly accurate bird even managing to defecate in my mouth. Having never eaten meat in the 20 years previously I can still remember the distinctive fishy taste of that runny, white liquid so for anyone who thinks that the life of a wildlife photographer is glamourous then think again! 😀 Please #followme at @andyparkinsonphoto to keep up-to-date with my images @andyparkinsonphoto @natgeo @thephotosociety #arctictern #farneislands #nationaltrust #ethicsbeforeimages #phototips #educateandinspire #nature #naturelovers #wildlifephotography #donoharm #wild_animalsgram #animalonearth #wildlifeaddicts_ #animal_beauty #nature_brilliance #nationalanimals
