🦃 AUTUMN COLOURS 🦃
Sun is low
Shining through leaves
A golden sea
Of wilting trees
Standing in the back
Firm as a rock
🚲 ESCAPE 🚲
My bicycle is my most used vehicle. It is fast enough to get to work, to the bakery, the supermarket, to the mountains or around the lake. And it is slow enough to experience my environment, to feel nature. However, car drivers are not that much into bicycles. Two days ago, a trucker shouted at me when I overtook him at a red trafic light. Later that day, an old man stopped at a roundabout, pulled down his window and shouted at me again: "You stupid bi**h, f*** off!" I have lots of experiences like this, and mostly I have them with truckers and old men. I cannot understand how especially our German pensioner can act like this. Don't they have time to not be stressed and furious? I haven't done anything wrong. But for them it is even a failure to exist. On my way to work, I have to ride 12 kilometres all along the main road, uphill. You can imagine the quantity of emissions that I am breathing in. It is healthier to go by car. But I don't want to drive every metre. What is it with us that life has to be comfortable every second? Why can't we make any sacrifices for our environment? It doesn't hurt, it isn't a big loss. It's just being a little bit aware. Most of the people, especially in traffic, are so stressed and rude. A load of bad energy that makes me sick already in the morning. I don't ride along the main road anymore. I take the way through the forest. It's longer, darker and the floor is wet. It takes much longer to get to work. Sometimes even there you can find cars, honking and rushing, no matter if it's forbidden to drive this way. But there are only few of them. Mostly I am on my own. Only my bicycle and me. The great escape.

🌄 GREENLAND IS GREEN 🌄
Do you know why Greenland is called Greenland? Actually, it doesn’t seem to be very green – even at second glance. It was Erik the Red who gave Greenland its name. In 982, he had to leave Iceland for murder. He sailed west and discovered a country with fjords and green valleys. When he returned to Iceland after three years, Erik brought with him stories of “Greenland” – which was a more appealing name than “Iceland”. He wanted to attract potential settlers and finally convinced lots of Vikings to move with him to Greenland. The Icelanders established two colonies on the southwest coast. This is where Greenland at times really is green. In the meantime, East Greenland is mostly white and blue. Only in summer, snow disappears for some weeks. Grass is growing and these cotton flowers that bring another shade of white to this mountainous landscape.
🌼 FAVOURITE FLOWERS 🌼
Every plant that manages to grow in East Greenland is a little wonder. The short summer, the cold, the rocks all over the place – it is obviously a dificult place to survive. I am especially fond of the cotton wool flowers. They seem to have found a way to get along with the weather conditions. Velvet growing in this rough country. East Greenland is full of these little wonders.
🌫 FOGGY VIEW 🌫
Fog follows us on our way through #Greenland
. It was the reason for our two days late arrival. Some days after that, we couldn’t leave #Tasiilaq
for the #Sermilik
fjord on time since we had to wait until the fog lifted. It is too dangerous to paddle in the middle of icebergs when mist is covering them. This morning, we had to wait again for some hours. Until sun came out and turned this grey world into an all-white and blue one. As we paddle to the village #Tiniteqilaaq
, the fog already starts to come back. We climb the top of the local mountain and enjoy this special view. No cloud in the sky. The icebergs are lying down there in the calm water. Parts of them are still sparkling in the sun. And parts of them are wrapped in the drabness of the fog again. Time for us to head back to #Sarpaq
. The scenery couldn’t be more impressive.
❄️ MOUSSE AU GLACE ❄️
Here's a secret: I love mousse and foam! A foam bath for example, which I miss so much on this kayaking adventure 🛀 I also love mousse au chocolat. Or the foam on a cappuccino or a beer. Another three examples of what I am missing deeply on our way through East Greenland 😩 But instead I spotted another type of mousse: mousse au glace – ice mousse, at least that's what our guide calls it. When an iceberg bursts into pieces (and that happens all the time), the fjord is full of this mousse au glace. It is wonderful to paddle along these heavy snowflakes, lying on the dark blue water, blazing in the sun. A sea of snowflakes around us and icebergs in front of us. A surreal surrounding that burns itself into my memory. I wouldn’t need the picture to remind this moment. But I am glad that I can share it with you and hopefully it expresses at least half of the magic it does in reality.
