"I enlisted when I was 17, a few weeks before my 18th birthday. Throughout my 21 years in the Air Force, I was never able to finish my degree because I was always being deployed. I retired in 1993, 25 years ago. Today, I'm on track to graduate with a degree in sports management in May.⠀
In 1977, I went to Columbia. In 1980, I went to Granada. I was at the Berlin Wall when it went down. I finished at Desert Storm and Desert Shield. I was also with NATO for 11 years, where I was stationed in Belgium, Italy, and Alaska.⠀
Every Sunday, I cook dinner for the other Illinois student veterans. I make a lot of things, but my specialty is chocolate. When I was in Belgium, I learned how to make chocolate. When I was stationed down near Rome, I learned how to make all kinds of pasta, and when I was stationed in Alaska, I made Eskimo dishes. Last weekend, I made everyone baked ziti, a salad, two chocolate creme pies and two pumpkin pies—everything from scratch. I even chopped up a pumpkin by hand.⠀
I'm 63, and I came to the university when I was 60. This is the only center of its kind in the United States. Other colleges come here to model what we've done. And the best thing here is the people. It's a tight knit community. We respect each other."⠀
