The Wind Orchestra. Landwehr Concert- the wind orchestra from Switzerland, performed in Mumbai at  Chhatrapati Shivaji Shangrahalaya. The Landwehr is not only the official concert and marching band of the canton & city of Fribourg but also its ambassador throughout the world. With a remarkable history dating from 1804, this world-class orchestra is constantly expanding new musical and international horizons. The ensemble today of more than 80 musicians is the latest in the long line of predecessors and shares the same musical heritage of Fribourg. Although their uniforms – the same worn by the Fribourg troops in 1858 – recall the richness of their past, their performances look distinctly towards the future. The concerts in Mumbai, New Delhi and Jaipur take place in the framework of the 70 Years of Swiss-Indian Friendship Initiative. Ramleela. At the time of advanced technologies including light, aerial acts and sound effect, little has changed the overall performance of this Ramleela for the people in the village of Jamnipur kotwa bahadurpur block around 30 km from Allahabad (Prayagraj). They still believe in simplicity for the last 100 plus years. Raamleela is performed here since year 1916 by special permission of the British general and then after the independence of our country in the year, 1950, state police granted them another special permission for the same. The cause for this Ramleela was not ordinary, it was part of a revolutionary act and their purpose was to exploit the western culture and Britishers. This beautiful act is inspired by the holy book Ram Charitmanas, meant to portray faith, ethics and love for country among  people, their objective was to develop moral values in the society and it also became eye of attraction for foreigners. Initially they did not have electricity and sound system so they used to perform at daytime, this culture is still alive in their Ramleela committee, in the village, the Ramleela is performed on open ground without any stage. Various acts are played at daytime, the sound system is brought on the field with the help of rickshaw and artists perform in front of keen villagers . Although, the characters wear traditional costumes but the shoes-traditional khadau (sleeper made up of wood) has now been replaced by sneakers, the play is funny at times, as the characters who are not delivering dialogues sit among the crowd and gossip with villagers once they’re done with their part. The most interesting fact about this Ramleela is young boys play all the character and sometimes Sita is taller than Lord Rama. Another interesting fact about this Ramleela is that it starts from the very first day of Shardiya  Navratri to Dussehra but organizers don’t just stop with Ram coming back to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana but instead go on till the birth of Luv-Kush and the end of Sita when she asks Dharti Maa to take her in her arms. Leh. Breathlessness, is one phenomenon that people experience both literally and figuratively when in Leh-Ladakh. “Literally”- because it is situated approx. 10,000 ft above sea level, hence scarcity of oxygen, although acclimatization takes care of that after a while and “Figuratively”- because, well, these landscape photographs above should be proof enough. Such sights can leave anyone breathless! Logistics of Ravana. It’s not an easy job making giant effigies for Dussehra. Yet the makers appear to be doing so with ease, on time. Prepare, create, paint, disassemble due to logistical reasons, pack it up and send it to it’s Dussehra ground, where it will be assembled back together again for the viewers to see.
