Kingfisher bird watercolour painting I did a few months a go 🐦 I really like the colour scheme for this piece, I definitely think the combination of blue, pink and purple is my favourite colour combo 😍 also I just uploaded a video where I go through my loose watercolor techniques if you want to know how I paint pieces like this.

I have just been working on a beginner animal coloured pencil series for my Patreon. Often it can be very overwhelming when you start out with a new medium. There are so many new techniques to learn and it can feel like a massive challenge to start by drawing a whole animal! So for this series I decided to go back to basics and talk through my most important techniques whilst creating these 3 less intimidating studies. I went through things like how to layer the colours, blend with solvent, identify where highlights and shadows should go, draw fur, draw feathers and etching techniques etc. If you are starting out with coloured pencils and often struggle to get the results you want then I do have this series available for $5+ Patrons now so that you can follow along with me in REAL TIME! You will also get instant access to over 200+ real time tutorials that are also already on my Patreon. You will be able to find tutorials on drawing animals, portraits, objects, flowers etc using a range of mediums! To check it out and learn more about what my patreon has to offer visit:

I did this drawing like a year a go and for some reason I never posted it! I remember falling in love with the reference photo for this because I thought the dogs eyes were so so cute 😍
Sometimes when I create my drawings I piece together lots of reference photos to get the idea I have to come to life. This drawing was a good example of that. I used separate references for the dog, grass and flowers. Originally the dog was just laying on a carpet but to me that felt boring so I decided to mix it up to make it a bit more interesting to look at.
Try not to feel limited by references, remember you can always piece them together to make something special! Don’t feel restricted to copying everything on one reference photo exactly how it is. Sometimes you may like a reference as it is and that’s fine but it you want to change bits or add things in, do it!! #drawing #dog #dogdrawing #animal #colouredpencil #coloredpencil #art #artsy #draw #sketch #pencildrawing

I am loving the look of doing drawing studies in this panel arrangement! I did these flower studies using charcoal and I am so pleased with how they turned out. I am actually going to be using these studies in a YouTube video talking about tips for making your drawings pop, which will be going up in the next few days! I created these 3 studies for a patreon tutorial series where I go through how to create these flower studies in real time with voiceover and teach you all of my techniques for using charcoal! You can check out these real time tutorials and 200+ more on my patreon at: patreon.com/kirstypartridge

Cat study done with pastels 😻🐱
I haven’t used pastel pencils much so I still have got so much to learn but I really have been enjoying using them. I think the biggest positive to using pastels is how softly they blend together. It is so easy to layer light colours over darker colours which made the fur really fun to draw!
As always this study is available over on my patreon at: patreon.com/kirstypartridge

Often I like incorporating different mediums in with my coloured pencil drawings. For this butterfly drawing I decided to use markers with my coloured pencils and I love the result. I go in and add the markers as a base layer for the flower and butterfly. This allows you to fill in all of the white of the paper and makes your colours really vibrant in the end. I then go in and add the details with coloured pencils on top. As you have already got a base layer of colours in with the markers you don’t have to worry about burnishing and filling in the white of the paper. You can simply shade in the shadows, highlights and add the details and it makes the whole process so much faster! Have you tried this technique before? 🦋

Over the last few weeks I have been working on creating lots of new tutorials for my Patrons and this ring drawing is part of a series where I am drawing different accessories. The ring that I drew is actually my engagement ring (my most favourite ring in the world 😍) and I really loved drawing all of the little reflections and details in this one!

Even though I do love realism, sometimes all I want to do is go in with my watercolours and be really expressive. I love using lots of colours, bleeding them out and adding splatters of colour to my paintings. I find it so fun not having to be super precise (like I do with realism,) it’s nice just to work very loosely and let the paint flow and work it’s magic 💕 don’t be scared just to be creative, some of the best paintings you create is when you just relax and don’t overthink everything!

Colourful Hair Study using Pastels 💕
Hair is one of my favourite things to draw. I love adding all of the details and with pastels it is even more fun. Pastels are great for layering so you can build up the base colours for each section of hair first and then go in and add lots of details on top! You can even layer light colours over dark colours with pastels which I love 😍 The real time for this drawing is available on my patreon at: patreon.com/kirstypartridge

I felt like painting pretty landscapes 😍 Which is your favourite?
Experimenting with new mediums, styles and techniques can be so important to not only help you improve but also to keep your motivation high. Experimenting and trying new things can be so fun and allow you to really let go and be creative because of the fact that you can have zero expectations of yourself when your trying something new... because well, you haven’t done it before!
It can be fun not knowing what the final outcome will look like. You may find a new love for something you never thought would be your kind of thing. I have had that happen to me so many times.
If you never experiment then you won’t grow as an artist!
I want to experiment more with watercolour. I use it quite a bit but I still believe I have lots to learn. These studies were incredibly fun to create. I really love the look of the 3 panels on one page. I wanted to create 3 landscape tutorials for my Patrons but I didn’t want to use 3 full sheets of watercolour paper. I saw @makoccinos
layout of her watercolour journal and it was the perfect solution for what I needed! I definitely want to do more watercolour spreads like this 💕

Realistic Eye Studies 👀 Which is your favourite?
I really enjoyed working on these studies. Lately my motivation for drawing has decreased and I have found myself becoming more and more frustrated and critical of my artwork. It is definitely true that we are our own worst critics. On a more regular basis I have found myself being dissatisfied with my work and it makes me frustrated and sad.
I think every artist goes through a period where they lose their motivation and don’t feel on form and I just wanted to tell you guys that it happens to everyone at some point, so don’t beat yourself up about it.
When I feel unconfident with my drawing abilities one thing I like to do is create a few pieces of art using the medium and subject matter I am most confident with. Try to build up your confidence by going back to what your best at. For me I love drawing eyes in coloured pencil, so doing these studies really helped to give me a confidence boost and restore my motivation.

Charcoal portrait sketch of @camila_cabello
I loved working on a portrait with only charcoal. Charcoal allows me to get those really dark values to make the portrait look more dramatic and have a great contrast. Also I love using paintbrushes to apply the charcoal to lighter areas, like the skin!
For this piece I used generals charcoal pencils and arches hot pressed watercolour paper!
The full real time tutorial for this drawing with voiceover is available for $5 patrons over on patreon so you can follow along with me and learn to create this drawing for yourself! You can check out my patreon at: patreon.com/kirstypartridge
