Michelle Smith of the Conservation Division disbinds the 1831 autobiographical manuscript of Islamic writer and scholar Omar ibn Said in preparation for further preservation treatment. Said was abducted from Senegal in 1807, sold into slavery in South Carolina, and after escape and recapture in North Carolina, wrote a series of works in Arabic including this autobiography and pleas for release. #conservation #omaribnsaid #collections #libraryofcongress #manuscript
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden today announced that Drew Gilpin Faust, historian, @Harvard University president and author of the Bancroft Prize-winning book “This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War,” will receive the John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity. The $1 million Kluge Prize, bestowed through the generosity of the late John W.
