CONGRATS to @lek_chailert
on the first Elephant Travel Mart supporting Eco-Tourism in Chiang Mai!
The ETM (Elephant Travel Mart) event was a great success ! Many media and travel agencies came to join in our hosting to learn about the growing number of projects who offer a more responsible travel opportunity to experience elephants. We hope that, with an increased awareness of the working environment of the captive elephant, more travel agencies will begin to support ethical projects in the future.
As I walked around the large hall, and saw so many faces of men and their families whom I have known for many years during my elephant travels, my heart swelled with pride for each owner of these new ethical camps, who now confirm in their developing work this model and gentler way to sustain their elephant's livelihood.
In the evening, SEF celebrated this shift in attitude, in care and responsibility, by presenting awards to the projects who manage guidelines well, based on policies of respect and animal well-being, as well as those who connect deeply to their community and foster a spirit of mutual support. We are excited to see these camps embark on a better way, and anticipate great success and continual improvement over time.
ETM is the first step whereby we walk out together into the light of a better day in the lives of the working elephant. We hope for the captive elephant to know a kinder world at the hands of men, putting an end to humiliating entertainment and service riding.

Thanks so much to the Director of The Tourist Authority of Thailand (Northern Region), who opened our ceremony. Thanks also to the government officials who are involved with animal welfare in Thailand, who came to our event to present awards to the elephant projects.
Thanks to all ethical elephant projects who joined to help and host this event. Also to SEF and ENP staff who work hard behind this success. See you again 2019.
