During a Federal government shutdown, we do not monitor or update social media. To the extent possible, vehicle access will continue to be provided to Longmire. Public vehicle access to Paradise will not be available.
The National Park Inn at Longmire will remain open with overnight lodging, gift shop, and dining, weather dependent. There are no NPS-provided services. Access may change without notice.
Park visitors are asked to use extreme caution if choosing to enter the park, as personnel will not be available to provide normal levels of assistance and emergency response. Entry during the federal shutdown is at visitors’ sole risk.
Travel on foot, snowshoes, or skis is not allowed on the road behind the closed gate at Longmire. Plows may be working the road to provide access to service park facilities and utilities during the shutdown. Visitors may use park trails at their own risk. —

Believe it or not, these spots of color are alive! Lichen, is a complex life form made up of fungi and an alga. They live together in a symbiotic relationship. Pinnacles has over 300 species of lichen, promising visitors to see brilliant shades of green, orange, red, yellow and black, while hiking on our trails. How many different lichen can you find?

Mount Rainier is famous for its snow, but at lower elevations rain is a far more common form of precipitation. Abundant rainfall refuels rivers and refreshes forests.
