The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) hasn’t activated its “Love Me, Save Me” campaign since the nefarious demolitions of Cloudlands and the Bellevue Hotel in late 1970s and early 1980s. In the face of unrelenting pressure on heritage places, the ongoing threat to landmarks and rising community sentiment for places such as the Broadway Hotel, the National Trust is activating their voice once again and asking Queenslanders to help save Queensland’s heritage places. The beloved Broadway Hotel, a Brisbane landmark, is at risk from demolition neglect. It suffered extensive damage in a fire on Sunday, 2 September 2018 but has also deteriorated and suffered from a lack of maintenance and subsequent lack of use for a number of years. Following the recent fire, we are more concerned that the future of this building is at risk – a risk that will increase each day if urgent stabilisation works are not carried out. To see what we are doing and how you can help follow the link in our bio! . . . #nationaltrust #nationaltrustqld #heritageaus

Travelling photographers William Boag and John Henry Mills captured this picture in a Queensland alluvial tin mining town of Stannum. Taken on 7 December 1872 outside the town's bark-clad Presbyterian Church, their camera captured a moment of the day when tin miner and storekeeper Robert Mungall married Jean Farrier Matthews. The Corundum Street church soon after was clad in weatherboard and given Gothic windows. Stannum became Stanthorpe. Today, Robert and Jean Mungall are remembered as pioneers of nearby Ballandean. Connecting People, Place and the Past is the theme of the 2019 Australian Heritage Festival. You can register your event now by following the link in our bio! #qldheritage #heritageaustralia

A wonderful new addition to Australia's National Heritage List is a Queensland site! Located in Cape York, Quinkan Country is a cultural landscape which tells an epic story of Aboriginal settlement and cultural systems in a semi-arid part of tropical Australia from the Ice Age through the Holocene into modern post-contact times. The story is preserved in an extensive, distinctive assemblage of rock art, in deep cultural deposits of rock-shelters and in a continuum of cultural features across the landscape. We applaud the Australian Heritage Council and the Hon Melissa Price, Minister for the Environment, for listing recognising the value of this site and protecting it for future generations! #queenslandheritage #heritageaustralia

Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. This picture captures the celebrations from this day in Queen Street. Bearing its model of the troop and hospital ship SS Kanowna and crewed by some of its officers, this float was one of many that made its way past the GPO in Brisbane in the 29 November 1918 procession that celebrated the peace that followed. Such were the numbers involved that the procession took 2¾ hours to pass any given point. Brass bands appeared at regular intervals. Soldiers and sailors, were they marching or transported in motorcars, were cheered by the crowds. As markers of remembrance, in November 1918 processions were held in towns and cities large and small across Australia. Information about Queensland events related to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice can be found by following the link in our bio! 📸 From the SLQ stereographic print no. 7729-0001-0033
This photograph captures the moment when members of the Band of Hope gathered for their annual picnic on the Brookfield recreation reserve, now the Brookfield Showgrounds, in November 1888. The Band of Hope, a temperance group, had formed in September 1871. Its meetings featured informative talks, recitation and singing. Thomas Moon of the pioneering family associated with the National Trust's Moon Memorial Tree Reserve was one of its chairman. Ten places in Brookfield, including the Moon Memorial Tree Reserve and the Brookfield Public Hall and Showground, are entered in the Brisbane City Council Heritage Register. You can search the BCC Register through their website. SLQ negative number 24927
Many visitors to Wolston Farmhouse ask why the house is situated where it is. Since none of its original outbuildings remain, it isn’t immediately obvious that it was a farmhouse. It started out as a horse stud, developed by its first owner, Dr Stephen Simpson. Of course there were most likely cattle, pigs and chickens too, to provide meat and milk, as well as a thriving orchard and vegetable garden established to feed Dr Simpson and his farm workers. Over time Dr Simpson increased his land holdings from the original 640 acres to around 4000 acres of freehold and leased land mentioned in the sale notice of 1860. The subsequent land owner, Mr Matthew Buscall Goggs, focussed mainly on cattle and also increased the holdings to around 8000 acres. The estate remained in a family trust until 1906, when it was sold off as small farms. The Grindles, a family of Irish immigrants, purchased the original 640 acres including the house, and established a dairy farm which continued until the late 1950s. The Grindles initially were innovative farmers and won awards at local shows for their cattle and milk production. Their legacy lies in the name of the road on which Wolston House is situated. Here is a photo of some of their prize-winning cows! #wolstonfarmhouse #visitbrisbane #historybrisbane

Prince’s Trust Australia, in partnership with INTBAU Australia, is delivering the 2018 Conversation Series, a celebration of contextual architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and sustainability to mark INTBAU World Congress in London this November. Their second October conversation will be held in Brisbane on October 25. Dr Shaneen Fantin - B.Arch (hons), PhD, Dip PM, Director, POD (People Oriented Design), Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Queensland and James Cook University, will present ‘Australian Indigenous Architecture: Old and New’. Since the 1970s, many Australian architects have been considering how non-Indigenous designers can work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to achieve better built environments. Shaneen will provide an introduction to Indigenous architecture in Australia: old and new and to the concept of ‘intercultural design practice’ with examples of Australian Indigenous architecture and intercultural practice methods through from related projects. Shaneen has worked collaboratively with Indigenous people on architectural projects to pursue new design methodologies that reflect these principles since 1995. PROPERTY OF THE WEEK 🏠 Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary 🐨 Conserving native wildlife and nurturing the local indigenous heritage for over 70 years, this regional treasure has also been educating and entertaining families and tourists from all across the globe! The idea came to fruition as beekeeper and flower grower Dr Alex Griffiths sought out a way to protect his prized blooms. By regularly feeding the lorikeets, he was able to veer their attention away from what was once their nectar and floral quarters, towards something even more tantalising — wombaroo nectar with honey 🐦 In 1947, Griffiths opened up, what was then the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, to the public as a small-scale lorikeet feeding display. In short order, this wonderful arena of birdlife garnered the attention of both locals and tourists, eventually becoming one of the Gold Coast’s best family attractions 👏🙌 The park was gifted to the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) in 1976, which turned the site into a not-for-profit social enterprise to directly facilitate the park’s rising numbers of native flora and fauna 🙏 In 1989, the original Currumbin Wildlife Hospital was founded, and specialist veterinarians have been caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife ever since 🚑 In 2010, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation was initiated to support the critical demands of the hospital (with its 10,000+ animal admissions per year), which operates as a community service..Today, the Sanctuary is home to native mammals, reptiles, birdlife and amphibians as well as some exotic species. Strong support from locals and the emergence of ecotourism has allowed the Sanctuary to thrive since its inception. 💚 Read more about the history of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary by following the link in our bio! 📸📸 Video captured by James Bavas in the 1960’s! 📸 Thank you to James’ son, Josh Bavas for sharing this with us! 🙌
