I recently read Reece Carters book The Happy Gut. It is packed with delicious recipes and insight about why eating whole foods is so beneficial for our guts. I've personally found his homemade fibre blend helpful to my own digestion so I thought I would share it with you. It's unflavored and very simple to make. Hi! 👋🏼 If you’ve read #GeniusFoods , you know that I'm a big fan of safely and deliberately using fasting as a tool for optimal performance and longevity. But WHY does fasting work? Does anybody know?!?! 🤷🏼‍♂️ . 🤓 Well, it's VERY complicated and all of the wonderful mechanisms are still being borne out in the literature, but in this graphic I explain three of the main pathways through which it is believed to work at least some of its magic. . 1️⃣ It activates AMPK, or AMP-activated protein kinase. AMP is sort of like a low-energy version of ATP, the energetic currency of cells! So when the ratio of AMP to ATP in a cell is high, it's a signal to the body that there's not enough energy! Although this is a stressor to the cell, it's also one of the major pathways to rejuvenation. In fact, a very old diabetes drug called metformin is being studied for it's anti-aging and neuroprotective effects, and it works in part by stimulating AMPK. . 2️⃣ mTOR inhibition. mTOR, or mammalian target of rapamycin, is a key regulator of autophagy. When mTOR is low, autophagy gets kicked into high gear! Autophagy is being studied for its lifespan-extending and cancer-protecting activity. It helps to get rid of damaged mitochondria, misfolded proteins, bacteria, viruses, and more. However, stimulating mTOR with protein is also one of the main ways to increase muscle mass so chronically inhibited mTOR isn't great either! . 3️⃣ It reduces insulin, like dramatically! Insulin is the body's chief anabolic hormone. It causes things to grow. This includes your waist! By fasting, we allow insulin to come down so that fatty acids can actually be burned. On the other hand, occasional insulin spikes can be healthy as well—for example, to shuttle glucose into your muscles so that you can do high intensity work in the gym, which is ALSO very important for longevity. . ⁉️ Make sense?
