After a long wait, pathways at the rear plaza of the statue are finally opening affording visitors a peaceful space to rest, chat, and take pictures. #findyourpark #encuentratuparque #statueofliberty #nps #nationalparkservice #tupelotree (Photo: NPS/Mulligan)

Ranger Pheona is excited to see the post hurricane Sandy walkway and tree restoration project on Liberty Island one step closer to being complete. Ranger Jeff takes the first step on new bricks that replaced asphalt that broke over time as trees matured. Tupelo trees were planted along the new paths. These leaves will turn a deep red during the fall! #findyourpark #restoration #nps #statueofliberty .
Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the first architect of the Statue died on this day September 17, 1879. Viollet-le-Duc was hired to design the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. He designed the internal structure of the head and arm holding the torch before passing away. Eiffel famously took on the project completing the internal structure that exists today. #OnThisDay #history #architecture #nps #findyourpark

#ThrowBackThursday : 75 years before the statue was completed, Fort Wood was built on what was once called Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island). Fort Wood is an eleven point star shaped fortification that aided in the protection of the Bay of New York as a second line of defense. Rodmans and 32-pounder cannon lined the fortication at one time. #TBT #MilitaryHistory #FortWood #FindYourPark #NPS

While the statue’s exterior has mostly turned green overtime through oxidation, visitors point out, especially on rainy days, that parts of the copper looks black. This isn’t a trick of the eye, or the rain turning her black. Part of the oxidation process of the copper makes the patina black instead of green. #nps #parkscience #statueofliberty #findyourpark #libertyisland

#ThrowBackThursday : Rangers are often asked where the big book is that immigrants signed at Ellis Island. Though Hollywood sometimes depicts such a book, it did not exist. At the time the legal inspection was conducted, the ships manifests were big loose sheets of paper, not yet bound. The photo shows this above. The manifests were bound eventually, but most no longer exist as they were photocopied onto microfilms in 1940s. #tbt #nationalparkservice #ellisisland #immigration #findyourpark
