Every night the Statue is illuminated. Though you cannot visit the island at night she is visible from lower Manhattan, parts of Jersey City, and the Staten Island Ferry. #liberty #nyc #statueofliberty #findyourpark #nps

December 6, 1881 Richard Morris Hunt was commissioned by the American Committee to design a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. His challenge was to create a stunning structure that could support the coming statue. #statueofliberty #findyourpark #nps #nps2018 #architecture #onthisday #otd

Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday, is observed with the lighting of a nine-branched candelabrum each night. This menorah was created by Jewish immigrant Manfred Anson in 1986. It combines his pride as an American and his Jewish heritage. The lamp currently resides in the museum collection at Statue of Liberty. #hanukkah #statueofliberty #menorah #findyourpark #nps #museum

This week, 30 years ago, President Reagan and President-elect George H. W. Bush met Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev for a private talk of 10 to 15 minutes with only interpreters present at the beginning of a mini-summit. They took a ferry to Governor’s Island for the meeting with the Statue of Liberty in view. The statue’s left foot can only be seen from above. Underneath the foot lies a set of broken chains. While there is no specific interpretation of the chains beneath her feet, what do you think they represent? (Photo description: statue’s left foot.) #statueofliberty #findyourpark #nps #nps2018
