Mental illnesses are serious medical illnesses. They cannot be overcome through “will power” and are not related to a person’s “character” or intelligence. Mental illness falls along a continuum of severity. Even though mental illness is widespread in the population, the main burden of illness is concentrated in a much smaller proportion-about 6 percent, or 1 in 17 Americans-who live with a serious mental illness. Sometimes anxiety isn’t seen but it’s always felt. Even in a person’s best moments, anxiety is still there. Sometimes anxiety is gasping for air, but sometimes anxiety is a person laughing. Sometimes it’s a person speaking eloquently to a large group of people. Sometimes it’s a person showing you their passion, and sometimes it’s a person creating beautiful pieces of art. Because sometimes anxiety is taking over the last person you’d expect. Sometimes anxiety terrifies everyone around us as we gasp for air and struggle to breathe, but sometimes anxiety can look like nothing, and not even the people we love the most can tell. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is one that causes people to feel anxious and worried most of the time and not just on specific stressful situations like most of us deal with. The worries these people have tend to be intense, persistent and interfere with their normal lives. The worries will relate to several aspects of everyday life including work, health, family, and/or financial issues, instead of just one issue at a time which can be extremely overwhelming for anyone! Minor things like household chores or being late for a meeting or appointment become the focus of the anxiety and can lead to uncontrollable worries and fears. From a non sufferers point of view a lot of the time they think mental health is a load of poop and that people need to get over themselves (I know this because I’ve been that person). And a lot of people say they suffer from mental health issues when they actually don’t, which also never helps the growing situation. But going past all that a lot of the time people don’t want to admit they are struggling or realise they actually have a problem. I don’t know if I am right to assume but I’ve come to realise people with some mental issues become very good at putting on a mask. A mask which hides all the mess your really feeling. A mask which helps you get through the day, that is until you peel it off and it all turns to crap again! It’s that way people suffer in silence! What I am really actually trying to say is don’t be afraid to speak up and say something! Something little or big! Without realising it you have a web of people around you who really care about you no matter how much you’ve tried to push them away, or hidden in your bed because you don’t want to face the world. Just a little chat with a family member, close friend or someone you don’t even know could actually help you out and like me without you realising they’ve realised your struggling too! Sometimes anxiety is a person lashing out at the people they love in an unexplainable rage for no apparent reason. It’s reacting out of anger instead of rationality. It’s snapping at people when that’s the last thing you want to do. It’s regretting the harsh words you said ten minutes later. It’s the tremendous amount of guilt you feel when you realize you can never take those words back. It’s dwelling on everything small and obsessing over anything that could happen and forgetting everything that hasn’t happened. It’s asking ‘what if’ constantly and only listing the worst possible case scenarios over and over again until you convince yourself the worst possible case scenario is the only scenario that makes any sense. Whether you feel that your mental health is in check or if you often struggle with it, it’s a reality of life. Every single person you know has thoughts about mental health. However, it’s true that some people admittedly have fewer thoughts about it, or may not even be able to recognize that they’re thinking about mental health. What Can we do to Change the Stigma? What does that mean? It means showing people that it is not weird or wrong to have a mental illness. When I see a person on a television show portraying a mental illness, it's always as a crazy person. The people we see on the news that shoot up a movie theater, they’re always labeled as crazy. But to me, that doesn’t represent those of us in this struggle. We have to show the real sides of mental illness and offer what we have learned through any means we can. We don't talk about it, right? Our suicidal thoughts. We don't tend to seek help because of the fear of judging. Or we do maybe, but don't find any consideration. Or the ones we approach to help don't seem to help us. But we must never be hopeless, no matter how it may seem. There are lot other than them which could be a help. There are a lot suffering the same. Together, we can be each other's strength. There's nothing wrong with your suicidal thoughts but with the ones who find them inappropriate. Everyone is meant to be vulnerable at times and there is nothing wrong with it. Ask for the help.
