This scene in the script took place at night. However in the scout I checked out the location and realized the large loft window (which was great to use as a base light source) was on the second floor. Also the windows were totally bare and looking straight into downtown LA. Now this wouldn't necessarily be a problem, however we needed to shoot this day for night. Doing that would require tenting the exterior of the windows and shooting moonlight through or totally blacking it out(which I'm not generally a fan of). I like to use windows whether they are day or night to push light through to add interest to scenes. The only problem was that we didn't have the budget to bring in a condor and rig up the outside of the building to shoot lights through. So the solution ended up being...rewrite the script so that it took place during the day. Now day can present its own challenges, but it was much more manageable. I was able to use the natural light, obscure it with set dec and shades, and then motivate floor units to key them with. This saved us an enormous amount of money and time. Sometimes the best solutions are simply planning ahead.

Shot with @themudgeman
starring in his first film. I was very impressed by not only his performance, but also his motivation. In addition to acting in the film he also produced the project. Every time we had a roadblock he was happy to step in and get it solved no matter what. Success + hard work are always correlated.
Going off the previous post, part of keeping the look interesting was getting a good mix of color in the lighting as well as the wardrobe and set design. Our main character is in a dark world he doesn't belong. Talking with our director @awesomertheo
we decided he should be wearing the bright yellow to stand out in the very dark situation he's been thrown into. @hdapp_inspired
did a great job transforming the messy garage into something more curated within our color pallette. The Red, yellow and blues stood out and everything else was very muted. Shooting at 4400k the practical tungsten light on a dimmer next to the stylized 10000 Kelvin moonlight shot through Lee 250 in the window really popped. Since there was a whole 12 pages in the one location it was important to find where we could keep it visually interesting and going a bit stylized with these ended up really working out. 📸: Arri Alexa Mini - Angenieux DP zooms

This was a short film we shot over the weekend. Because we had so many pages to achieve in a single day, the idea was to set up practicals throughout the location to motivate off of and have the blocking of the actors utilize the lighting in different hotspots around the garage. I ended up mounting 3 quasars and a shop light on the ground to be used as practicals throughout and then rigged kinos above and out of the shot to use as actual keys for the subjects in the room. Using the eggcrates I was able to keep the contrast and control the direction pretty well without too much extra work. Everything was shot at 4400 Kelvin which really helped feel both the warm and cool sources within the room.

This was my favorite shot to set up. I really enjoy night time exteriors and the goal was to really create an almost perfect painterly quality to the end of the scene. The tent we had to create from scratch to fit our logistical and visual needs. Lighting was a DS6 on the right side bouncing off a 12x12 ultrabounce to create the base "moonlight" exposure, as well as another DS6 bouncing off a smaller 4x4 on the left side to bring up the back portion of the house by the garage. Then each window in the house and garage was fitted with a Voyager or quasar tube from the floor level to give a glow. Inside the tent we had another voyager with the diffusion pulled off to achieve harder shadows on the tent. In post we were able to add a little bit of stars in the night sky. . . . . . . .

Got to check out some camera tests today with the new Atlas prototype anamorphics. Dan Kanes seems to really have a good handle on what he was after creating these. I was impressed by how good the image was for the price. While I would definitely need to do a more extensive test to really determine how or when I would use these vs other glass aside for budgetary reasons, it's very clear that it's tapping into a market of people who very much want this. Thanks for the invite to come check it out with the rest of the guys @sandgar

It was at that moment he realized...there was not a bathroom in sight.
In this piece, color was super important. The grandson introduces a pink light in the scene which represents his passed grabdmother. Using a teal/orange/pink triadic color pallette, we were able pick set pieces(chairs, wardrobe, furniture, books, etc) that fit within this and then further support it with lighting and the final color grade. The pink really needed to pop and the teal was the main counterbalance to do that. Without the teal moonlight the pink would have washed the scene and made it feel very flat, especially at the end when it washes over his face.
