"Passages," an artwork dedicated to Walter Benjamin, above Portbou, Spain. Created by Dani Karavan, an Israeli artist. Postbou on the left, cemetery entrance on the right.
Walter Benjamin was a philosopher whose work is important to my field. Also jewish, he was forced to flee Nazi Germany in the 1930s. He made it to Portbou, the northernmost town on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, having walked across the Pyrenees. Denied passage by the Franco government and facing a return to the Nazis, he committed suicide in Portbou, where I was surprised and gratified to find this memorial. It sits in a cemetery overlooking the harbor. Just outside the cemetery is a piece of landscape art dedicated to Benjamin. You can see more pictures in the "Walter Benjamin" highlight at the top of my profile page. #refugee
